G'Day Jeremy,

I already tried that and the performance was still very slow.

My best advice so far was to use NX. I just spoke with one of the IT guys where I work and he indicated that NX was essentially the same as VNC except it uses different protocols etc. He said i'd still get the yucky desktop and Linux windowing system that I saw when I did VNC. The whole point of my discussion here was to get a faster version of what xhost or ssh provides i.e. the individual X windows all displayed back separately on my Mac and I have the ability to locate them using Expose and put them into different Spaces if I want.

Is the IT guy I spoke with mistaken?

(Ignoring for the moment your comment about linux desktops - In many ways I think the latest gnome/KDe offerings rival OS X ;) ).

He is mistaken. NX/NoMachine can be run in single window mode. See for instance :-

http://nomachine.org/documents/html/getting-started.html

section 4.3 (as opposed to 4.2 for full desktop session, as you get from VNC)
