This is a problem that will occur if you install 2.2.1 or later, then do an OS update without then reinstalling 2.2.1 or later (as I see is your case by the versions you list below). Please install 2.2.3 (and reinstall it after your next OS update as well).

Pretty vanilla 10.5.3 on PPC hardware.  The "About" menu on X11 says,
"X11.app 2.2.1 - (xorg-server 1.3.0-apple5)".
