can't access 'System Events' because X11Application can't be found?

I'm trying some simple Applescript, but I can't access the application
'System Events', and when I look in system.log I find this:

Jun 19 09:23:12 hwvpn-janssen86 System Events[277]: Unable to find class: X11Application, exiting
Jun 19 09:23:12 hwvpn-janssen86 com.apple.launchd[103] ([0x0-0x1e01e].com.apple.systemevents[277]): Exited with exit code: 1

Pretty vanilla 10.5.3 on PPC hardware. The "About" menu on X11 says,
"X11.app 2.2.1 - (xorg-server 1.3.0-apple5)".

Bill
