At the risk of pointing out the obvious, you could use quartz-wm with
--proxy-only and use some other window manager (I've used Kwin, it's not
perfect, but it gets good enough, I think). It has sufficiently confugrable
keyboard options that you could reproduce all of xquartz's keybindings should
you so desire.
