No Terminal Opening

I'm using 2.2.3 (downloaded and installed after latest OS update) -- when I start it, it doesn't automatically open a terminal anymore. No worries I think, I'll just launch one. Nothing happens. So I'll quit X11 and restart it, still nothing. About the third time I quit and restart X11, I get about 10 terminal windows (or however many times I pressed cmd-n, or tried to launch a terminal from the window).

I'm running Leopard 10.5.3 on the last G4 15" powerbook. If there is something I can do on my end, I'd love to get some hints.

om
