Actually -- this turned out to be my solution (I hope at least). I really should have done that before starting this thread because I got some error output regarding an invalid MIT magic cookie. I moved my .Xauthority file, and after a reboot, got a new one. Now I can get a terminal window even after closing and reopening X11. Whoo Hoo!


Note, simply logging out and logging in didn't work, I had to do a whole reboot. Of course, I've only tried it twice now, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
