Actually -- this turned out to be my solution (I hope at least). I
really should have done that before starting this thread because I got
some error output regarding an invalid MIT magic cookie. I moved
my .Xauthority file, and after a reboot, got a new one. Now I can get
a terminal window even after closing and reopening X11. Whoo Hoo!
Note, simply logging out and logging in didn't work, I had to do a
whole reboot. Of course, I've only tried it twice now, so I'm keeping
my fingers crossed.
Everyone: have a delightful weekend.
