So it seems that the consensus, at least among people posting on a Saturday, is that X11 v 2.2.1 is basically ready for prime time except for interactions with Spaces. Since I am presently using Tiger, I don't require Spaces to work right (or without astonishment).

I've re-run this test a bit more scientifically.
I think your results are entirely consistent with my theory in ticket 102:
when you force a switch to another space by selecting an X11 window in
that space, the visible display result is that you've changed to that
space, but the part of Spaces that is in charge of space-switching still
thinks you're in the previous space. So for example if you had been in
space 1 to start with, control-rightarrow sends you to space 2, no
matter which space you thought you'd jumped to by selecting another X11
window.
After fooling with it for a few hours, I'd say that 2.2.1 together with
turning off workspaces-auto-swoosh produces an environment that is worth
my time to criticize; up to now Spaces has been so bad that I'd rather
just work in one space. But it's still full of bugs. I've filed a few
today and fully expect to be filing more as I work with it ...

I really do miss the simplicity and usefulness of DeskTop Manager. Apple needs to add a flag to spaces: I_Know_What_Im_Doing_Dont_Try_To_Help_Me_Manage_My_Spaces = YES
As Michael Cowlishaw would say, Spaces has a high astonishment factor.
