Merle,
I tried your suggestion, but it didn't help. I still get windows
drawn hopelessly off-screen. I also looked through the other
available options as posted earlier, but I didn't see any that might
make a difference. On my old OS-9 X11 software, there used to be a
flag that would prevent windows from being drawn off the visible
desktop, perhaps something like that could be included in a future
revision? I can't say whether the previous version of X11 had this
problem because I didn't have the same hardware then as I do now. For
now, I just make sure that if I will be taking the laptop for a trip,
I run matlab and leave the windows on the laptop screen and quit so
that they're remembered to be in that spot. A bit of a hassle, but
not the end of the world.

Here's what I use to keep X11 from opening windows that are bigger
than my screen which is a little different but related to your
problem:
defaults write org.x.X11 wm_limit_size -bool true
This might work in your situation.

Hi all,
I have a question about Matlab, X11, and dual monitors. Wwhen I
start up Matlab, it tries to remember where the various windows
(e.g. editor and shell) were last located. If I last used it on
the external monitor, and then try to run it on my laptop without
the external monitor, Matlab places the windows where it thinks
they should go, and that is off-screen and I have no way to drag
them back to the visible desktop. Is there some flag I can set in
the X11 system to prevent windows from being placed in a non-
viewable place? Thanks...
