That is truly bizarre. That /tmp/launch-... must come from somewhere,
after all. Can you run
printenv | grep /tmp/launch
on the remote machine? Does it produce anything?

You could try:
defaults write org.x.X11 app_to_run '/usr/X11/bin/xterm -ls'
to force the initial xterm to run a login shell.
