reset DISPLAY variable?
reset DISPLAY variable?

I have had a problem for some time where my $DISPLAY variable keeps
getting set (to :0.0) in ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist. I have no idea
what puts it there but I delete it and then it reappears every time I
reboot the machine. I have tried a few things (like changing the
permissions on the file) but can't seem to stop it being written, or
find out what is writing it there at startup.
As a simple workaround, I was wondering if there is any way of
determining the correct $DISPLAY variable once it has been overwritten?
I would also like to make a suggestion: Seeing as Apple's X11 uses
this strange scheme (though I understand the reasons) and because
incorrect settings of $DISPLAY are a common cause of problems, perhaps
there could be another variable set as a backup (like
APPLE_X11_DISPLAY or something), so that something like:
export DISPLAY=$APPLE_X11_DISPLAY
could be used to reset the display variable if it has gone wrong. At
the moment I have to logout and login again to recover the correct
variable.
Even better if someone can tell me what is writing to my
environment.plist I would be very grateful.
Thanks,
Daniel
