I haven't had the time to follow the updates for quite some while

First, I notice that the installer no longer insists on a logout.
But it seems like it should.
Why do you think it should? The reason before was so that you got the
updated LaunchAgent, but it's the same as in 10.5.5 (which is required
to install it)
At any rate, after installing (and not logging out) I had rapidly
worsening problems, culminating in a forced reboot.
?
At first, X11 would freeze with a spinning beach ball when I opened
the preferences window, and needed to be force quit.
This is the first I've heard of it. Do you have a sample of the
problem?
Then emacs (cocoa, not X) started crashing, and Terminal froze up.
Well, this seems unrelated.
In the end I was unable to log out or perform a normal reboot, so I
had to do the option-command-power switch maneuver.
Second, ... oh wait, there is no second. I couldn't get the
pasteboard stuff to work, but all of a sudden it does work, both
ways. Whether it was finger trouble or an actual problem remains to
be seen. So I am content for now.
Ok... so it looks to me like you just had some bad luck with your
system since Terminal, Cocoa emacs, etc failed too.
