There is a way to change app icons: Do a Get Info on the X11 icon in /
Applications/Utilities
Then do a Get info on any image file you like, then select & copy the
image from the GetInfo window, then paste it into the image on the
GetInfo window for X11. That should change the icon to your custom
icon. Otherwise, there is an Icon Composer in /Developer/Utilities
which you can use to create your own custom icon, save it, then repeat
the GetInfo steps.
I did this on Tiger to create custom HD icons, and it still works
under Leopard.
