I don't get why they list this method as "Leopard Only". I've been
doing this exact thing for
On Tiger or earlier you need to install something like SSHKeychain
to get an ssh agent hooked into the GUI properly. Leopard has one
built in. ssh-agent is a Good Thing, you load it with your password
protected keys and it will autoload them via passwords stored in the
keychain so you don't need to type anything after the first time you
add them.
Oh, and if you're paranoid you set the preference to autolock the
keychain after some amount of idle time; this gives you the equivalent
of single sign-on, since the keychain password unlocks all passwords
stored in the keychain. (I do this on my work laptop.)
