Oho, *that's* where that came from!
It can be replicated with local applications as well; I was running a
couple xterms and TightVNC vncviewers when I toggled my HDTV into
monitor mode. (Which was really annoying for other reasons not at all
related to X11; apparently Leopard has some "issues" with multihead.)
