Thanks to everyone who replied --- the problem was a bit of stupidity
on my part. I keep my dotfiles in CVS and have a shell script to
populate a new homedir with them. To make a long story short, a
couple of weeks ago I was updating that script, which had bitrotted,
and tested it by running it on my MacBook's homedir. One piece of
bitrot I didn't catch was that it installed an outdated .xinitrc,
which hasn't worked since the switch to x.org. Two weeks later I
take updates and reboot, and when X won't start I've forgotten all
about having re-created my homedir's dotfiles.
Mea culpa.
