There is something about gnome that does not load the proper fonts.

The reason found there was that gnome comes with a set of completely
crazy xmodmap files, and if you aren't careful, one of them is loaded,
and its file name is then hardcoded in one or more of the config files
in the ~/.gconf* and ~/.gnome2* directories, which makes them hard to
override.
