Thank you very much for the workarounds for the text font problems. I
tried both methods but found that when you start up gnome using the
first method that gnome destroys the xmodmap info or fonts when you
exit. I used the second idea of moving /sw/share/xmodmap out of the
way. That works great. The fonts are correct after restarting. I hope
the gnome maintainers can get this fixed so others can use gnome
without this font problem.

The reason found there was that gnome comes with a set of completely
crazy xmodmap files, and if you aren't careful, one of them is
loaded, and its file name is then hardcoded in one or more of the
config files in the ~/.gconf* and ~/.gnome2* directories, which
makes them hard to override.
