I just wanted to drop a little note about the X11 updates included in
OSX 10.5.5. This OS update ships a version of the X11 server that is
the most recent release from the 1.3-appleXX line (essentially the same
server as shipped with 2.2.3). The rest of the components that make up
X11, however, did not get updated beyond security updates. The version
reported in "vanilla" 10.5.5 is 2.1.5 to distinguish it from the 2.2.x
series which has a much newer userland.
Furthermore, the kernel bug which caused the "xterm is taking up 100% of
my CPU" has been fixed in 10.5.5
They still did not fix the symlinks like libXdamage.1.0.0.dylib that are
incompatible with the X11SDK.pkg from xcode-3.1. So with Mac OSX 10.5.5
plus xcode-3.1, you still cannot compile software that links to X11 and
uses gnu autotools.
Both the continuing existence of a separate X11SDK.pkg and the contempt
with which it is treated by the OS release guys are mistakes Apple
should be deeply ashamed of.
Fortunately there are Jeremy's xquartz update packages that provide a
consistent X11 installation (well, apart from the missing xmkmf/imake
;-) ).
