Font mangling in GTK apps

  • Subject: Font mangling in GTK apps

Well, I *think* it's in GTK apps.

First, let me say that I've not been tracking this list very closely, and while I've done a quick search on trac, I didn't do an exhaustive search to see if this has been reported (scanned the 6 pages of a search for "font"). I've been subscribed to this list for a while, though, and I haven't seen anything relevant in subject lines, so I'm guessing it's something strange on my machine.

Second, I should say that I've had this problem for a long time -- at least since 10.5.0, with the X server that came with that kit, and every version of xquartz I've used since (I have not installed every version, but quite a few, and I'm up to 2.3.1 currently).

The problem I've had has been in wireshark and gnucash, 2 GTK applications. Generally, what happens is that when I launch the application, the fonts are not rendered properly on the screen.

Here is a screenshot taken from wireshark, for example:

If I re-size the window, the fonts restore themselves properly, so I can work around the issue (though I will say that some widgets in gnucash tend to "toggle" this behavior, which can be annoying).

These GTK apps are build from macports, FWIW, under a fresh and synced installation.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior, or if it's "just me".

Other perhaps relevant information:

Hardware Overview:

  Model Name:	MacBook
  Model Identifier:	MacBook2,1
Processor Name:	Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:	2 GHz
  Number Of Processors:	1
  Total Number Of Cores:	2
  L2 Cache:	4 MB
  Memory:	2 GB
  Bus Speed:	667 MHz
  Boot ROM Version:	MB21.00A5.B07
  SMC Version:	1.13f3
  Sudden Motion Sensor:
  State:	Enabled

System Software Overview:

  System Version:	Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33)
  Kernel Version:	Darwin 9.5.0

The 10.5.0 installation was an upgrade from 10.4.9, I think, and I've upgraded each minor release from 10.5.0 to 10.5.5.

Thanks!
Fred
