My guess is that you maybe you don't have the org.x.startx LaunchAgent
running. Please tell me the output of:
launchctl list | grep org.x
ls -l {,/System,~}/Library/Launch*/org.x*
and also:
What happens when you run 'xterm' from Terminal.app?

Going back to an earlier revision of the OS is painful, but it seems
to be the only thing left I can do if I am to do my work (IDL is
necessary).
