I don't know if this will help you, as I'm on a G5 PPC, but I was having troubles because of a "xhost +" command in my .profile (left over from 10.4.11). The fix (suggested by Mr. Seagraves and email@hidden ) was to create a .xinitric file with the following:

#!/bin/sh
xhost +
exec quartz-wm

SInce then, my machine has worked very well. If you have a .profile or .bashrc file, you might want to check them for similar commands. They also suggested checking the X11 preferences, which I did, & found that it also wasn't allowing X connections from other Unix servers on our internal network in spite of the xhost +. These changes made my system work as it used to - well.

For purposes of completeness, I remembered some other things i did to try to fix the X11 "runaway" problem. Here's a more complete list of things I did related to the runaway problem.

In the utility Cocktail I ran "Clear System Caches" with every option selected.
I ran Leopard Cache Cleaner.
I deleted stray files and folders in /private/tmp/ and I deleted ~/.XauthorityXXX files (I recall there were three .XauthorityXXX files)
I disabled X11 daemons in launchd with Lingon and rebooted.
At this point, I could run X11.app without observing the runaway problem, The dock icon acted normal, I got the X cursor, but my WM wasn't coming up.

So this is when I checked the syslog, edited /etc/bashrc, fixed the JPEG error, and got my WM working again.

I think the runaway problem and the JPEG errors are separate problems. The JPEG error may have triggered something, but I can reproduce that error now and cannot reproduce the runaway.

Hope this helps.
