There is a well known issue with MacBook Pros (circa early 2007) in that they lose keystrokes. Apple even released a fix for it after volumes of complaints - it helped a little, but the issue still persists. I've convinced myself it's a design flaw they can't fully remedy. So the big question is - are you using a MacBook Pro of that vintage?

It happens to me as well... even when X11 isn't running, so as much as I'd like to figure it out, it's not an X11 issue...

I'm still seeing the problem that every so often X11 drops keyboard
focus and regains it after a second or so. (I think that iCal is
the culprit, although there may be others --- one thing I have seen
repeatedly is that these events happen exactly one minute before an
iCal alarm is due to pop up.) Up to now, that just meant that a couple
of keystrokes went into the aether.

I see the same thing happen -- X11 loses focus for a split second and keystrokes get lost. It happens pretty regularly to me, but I doesn't seem to be related to an iCal alarm as far as I can tell.

I'm afraid I haven't tried rc5.
