I don't use xv, but do use some other homegrown ancient legacy X11
apps where I work. Some of those have a tendency to open windows
larger than the screen (I use X11.app in rootless mode). In that
case, I use the following to tell quartz-wm to never open a window
larger than the 'usable' screen area (see the quartz-wm man page):
defaults write wm_limit_size -bool true
This seems to work quite well for my situations.

Well, it can't because it has no idea what decorations the window
manager is going to add.
Surely it's the window manager's responsibility to make that

available somehow.
