I just installed version XQuartz 2.3.3 and now I am unable to set
DISPLAY=:0 and connect. The server is not listening on port 6000. How
do I re-enable the ability for network clients to connect to my X

the preferences, I have "allow connections from network clients" turned on.
Don't set DISPLAY at all with OSX 10.5 - X11 is now handled by launchd
and setting DISPLAY breaks this.
If you want to bring back a display window from a remote machine to your
local OSX machine, simply ssh in as you would any other UNIX system

and start the X application. This should bring back the window just fine
(and if X11 isn't running on your mac start it automatically, which is
the point of the launchd thing).
see

for instance for more details.
