Did you have one of the updates from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/
before you installed 10.5.7? If yes (or perhaps in any case) you might
wish to upgrade to the latest release (2.3.3.2) available from there.

It will restart after being quit if there is any demand for it, like
some X11 client trying to run. Otherwise, once it's gone it stays gone
until needed. I presume what you are seeing is that it comes back with
a new pid rather than just the same old pid running on?
Are you saying it sucks up lots of CPU time while it really should
have nothing to do?
