pasting from X11 to Aqua does nothing (just beeps) until I do the
first copy in Aqua.  Pasting within X11 works fine.

Interesting. I have not seen this issue before. I will try it out here, but can you please file a bugreport about it at http://xquartz.macosforge.org?
