I posted a question a few days ago, got no responses, but now have
some more data, and so hoping again someone will read and respond.
First, does anyone out there have a successfully running current
version of xemacs (21.4.22), on OS X 10.5 or 10.6, installed from
macports or fink? Successfully running meaning that it generates its
initial xwindow in a few seconds rather than a few minutes?
I have installed xemacs from both macports and from fink (the latter
is 21.4.20) on my new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and also the
macports one on a desktop G5 running Leopard. In all of these cases
the startup of the initial xemacs window is excruciatingly slow,
several minutes. In all cases I can start up in terminal mode (-nw)
fast. And now I can add that if I tell this xemacs to display on
a remote host, it is fast -- even if the remote host is in fact the
SAME physical machine. (That is, if in an xterm I do ssh -Y from my
machine to itself, and then start up xemacs from within that ssh
session, the initial xemacs window comes up in just a few seconds!).
So does anyone know what might be going on when xemacs displays to the
local x server directly?
