Emacs locking up my X connection...

I've noticed that when I look at email like Rich Cook's, which has
gratuitous odd glyphs in the .sig, my X11 email reader locks up for over
a minute, but my router indicates furious network traffic between the
X11 client (mh-e runing in GNU Emacs 23.1 on a Mac Pro running OS X
10.5, XQuartz 2.5.3) and the X11 server (XQuartz 2.5.3 on a Mac Pro
running OS X 10.5). I build my own Emacs from source using "--with-x
--without-x-toolkit --without-ns". Then it finally displays, borrowing
from Rich's .sig again, two empty rects and two little telephone glyphs.
I assume it's because I have my X11 fonts misconfigured somehow; anyone
know a solution?
Bill
