In the distant past, I saw problems of this nature too. Snooping on
the network connection, I determined that emacs likes to request a
complete list of fonts from the X server at the slightest provocation.
And the respons is quite long! I never found a solution. In my present
setup, the problem does not arise, so I have stopped looking.
