Ok, I've attached my basic system profile to the ticket. It only happens when I run XQuartz.app, not when I run the standard X11.app. It isn't limited to xterm, I can reproduce it with other apps, like "xeyes -fg palegreen", though it's easier to see with xterm. I also see it running remote X applications. So it doesn't appear to be the apps, but the X server. I also just tried creating a brand new account and running X from there, and it also exhibits the same behavior.
