Some questions, which might or might not help pinpoint the problem:
Does it do the same thing in Terminal? In an xterm started from
Terminal, in either foreground or background? What kinds of files are
you trying to open? Does this happen with all kinds of files, or just
some?
What are the applications that open the files? Are the files in your
current
directory or elsewhere? Do you happen to have several attached disk
drives that have applications on them? How much RAM do you have?
Does it matter whether the application that opens the files is already
open?
How large are the files you are trying to open?
It would seem it must be either taking a long time to find the
application
for some reason, or a long time to bring up the application (maybe due
to
set up that needs to be done, or maybe need for more virtual memory),
or a long time to actual load the file for some reason.
I wonder if the application might make use of some environment variables
for locations of things that might not be set or set differently in an
xterm,
depending upon your set up.

Finding solutions to problems with the "open" command is not easy with
Google. Hopefully this is not too unrelated.
Since upgrading to 10.6.2 when I use "open filename" from an xterm I
get a long delay (30 or so seconds) before it "opens". But If I
double click from the Finder it opens in an instant.
Looking for clues, debugging advice, or a better place to ask this
question.
Thanks.
