What Apple apps make files with single quotes by default?
While it's true that we should be able to handle these types of files, such characters in file names have consistently been problematic because those characters have special meaning to the shell. Hence such characters have been discouraged in UNIX filenames pretty much forever. In fact, you'd have the exact same problem on any other UNIX OS with a recent version of xinit since the code in question is not specific to Mac OSX.
