Okay, here's an actual example: if you have file sharing turned on, connect from another machine using AFP or SMB, and look at the list of shares. You'll see that the shares for the various users' public folders are all called "(Long Name)'s Public Folder".
So when you mount one, your filesystem will have a whole bunch of paths like "/Volumes/Throatwobbler Mangrove's Public Folder/path/to/whatever".
Of course, you're unlikely to have your home directory in a public folder on another machine, but the point remains that Apple doesn't give any indication to its users that they should try not to use certain characters in paths.
