Are you able to interact with other X11 applications? Try starting xterm and running 'xev' from xterm. This should give you a small white window which you can click, type in, and move around the screen. You'll see various input events reported to your xterm window describing the application is receiving. If that looks correct, my guess is there is a problem with devedit.
