That's what will happen with BetterTouchTool and a middle-click gesture defined
to it (or with at least one such other tool, I think). These tools add functionality
that the basic Magic Mouse driver lacks, such as recognizing additional gestures and
generating events (or taking other actions). One can define a middle click event
with BTT to any gesture it can recognize; if getting a middle click right consistently
with no tactile point of reference is a problem, one could define a three-finger click
to generate a middle click event instead; that's just a matter of whatever is
comfortable.
Apps (including Xquartz) neither know nor care that the event was perhaps synthesized
by some other piece of software rather than coming directly from the device.
I've done this, and running xev, I can clearly generate mouse button 1, 2, and 3
events (as well as 4, 5, (vertical scroll) and 6, 7 (horizontal scroll) with the
Magic Mouse and BetterTouchTool.
Note: BetterTouchTool only works on Snow Leopard. I haven't tried other tools that
extend Magic Mouse functionality (there are at least three or four, not all free) to
know which (if any) that would also do the job might work on Leopard.
Note: at least right now, AFAIK BetterTouchTool does _not)_ support chording
(generating events equivalent to multiple mouse buttons being held down together).
But the old "Mighty" Mouse couldn't do a 1-3 chord either, because of the way it
worked. If you need that particular functionality, you may have to use a regular
three button mouse.
