After I read your post saying you installed from macports, I figured it
might not work. I have used the beta version because when I started
with my old PB, the "stable" version was crash prone. I run 21.5
(beta29) which I configure and compile regularly. In that version
configure has
--with-ipv6-cname Try IPv6 information first when canonicalizing host
I also turn off LDAP and do not autoload tramp.

configure ignores that option:
configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --without-ipv6-cname
I did not see anything like it in configure --help
I can see code about it in the configure script, though. Confusing. Looks like stuff for the xemacs mailing list. I'm subscribed and sent a message but have not heard back yet.

Hmm, this is interesting, in the xemacs sample, it is apparently stuck
calling something called getaddrinfo, so there may be some DNS thing
happening, which makes sense as we have a quirky network with all
sorts of firewall bullsh*t going on. :-) How can I poke into this?
I suggest that you check the archives for XEmacs Beta at

Two of the main developers work with Macs (Stephen Turnbull and Aidan
Kehoe). I believe that the DNS issue mited to Macs and may be mediated
by adding the configure directive --without-ipv6-cname to your configure
command before making XEmacs. I am not sure that is the way to fix the
problem. But I am pretty sure the developers have discussed this
within the last year. Unfortunately, it looks as though the search
function has not been restored to the email archive, but the list is on
