No joy there. I also tried various keys with the (`) key, but
nothing changed.
Another data point is that it's in that mode now (I haven't
restarted X11 since posting my message yesterday), but I can get
the (`) character in this ``vim'' invoked from the same Linux
host running clusterssh via ``xterm -e mutt -f $mailbox''. In
any other window it jumps to the next application window and
requires hiding X11 in the top menu, then bringing it back from
the dock.
A factor I left out yesterday as well is that I'm using a
Microsoft 4000 ``natural'' keyboard via an IOGear USB/DVI KVM
switch on my Macbook Pro. I have the cmd and option keys
reversed in System Preferences, but am *NOT* running the
Microsoft IntelliKey as I don't know if that would have
unintended consequences when using the main keyboard.

I haven't a clue what triggers this. The vast majority of my
work in X11 is doing development and support of Linux systems
using ssh and xterms. I rarely run X11 graphical programs other
than the xterms.
