The X11 on this update:
XQuartz 2.3.5 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple53)
has inherited the problems with missing lines in scrollbars that I was getting in 2.4.0 back in November.
I am still running 1.4.2-apple47 on my PowerPC laptop to avoid them.
Looks like I am about to rejoin the 'run' your own X11 group.
