Weird. I was under the impression this problem was new to the 1.5.x
series and not in the 1.4.x series. If that's not the case, then it's
actually good news since we may be able to more easily track down the
cause now.
Did you have a problem with version 2.3.4 from earlier Snow Leopard
releases?
If not, I would be interested in knowing what version of the server
introduced the change. The 1.4.x builds in http://static.macosforge.org/xquartz/downloads/SL/
are for X11.app (the later versions are for XQuartz.app, see the
README.txt).
Try out X11.bin-1.4.2-apple45.bz2 through X11.bin-1.4.2-apple54.bz2,
and try to narrow down which incremental change causes the issue.
Note that some of the older versions do not work with the new
$DISPLAY, so your best bet to starting the older builds is running the
following from Terminal.app:
DISPLAY="" /Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.bin

The X11 on this update:
XQuartz 2.3.5 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple53)
has inherited the problems with missing lines in scrollbars that I
was getting in 2.4.0 back in November.
I am still running 1.4.2-apple47 on my PowerPC laptop to avoid them.
Looks like I am about to rejoin the 'run' your own X11 group.
