Does it lock out mouse clicks when expose is invoked another way (keyboard combo)? If not, you could either disable those side buttons via System Preferences > Mouse, or via perhaps a more complicated route, tell X11 to ignore those buttons?

I can 100% reliably break my mouse interaction with X11 by invoking expose via squeezing the side buttons on my bluetooth mighty mouse when X11 is the front-most application. |
