Hi,
At work we're attempting to migrate from NFS mounted home directories to AFP mounted ones. The reason for this is generally due to the fact that Spotlight doesn't play nice with NFS mounted home directories, and a few other reasons.
However, it seems like there is a problem with xauth when you have an AFP mount home directory, it cannot write the .Xauthority file when you log in via ssh, so X11 forwarding doesn't work. There are various work arounds, e.g.:
http://ramblings.narrabilis.com/wp/forwardx11_xauth/
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20060410092629437
and it seems like this has been an issue for a while (I found references dating back to 2006). I was wondering if this was an issue that could be fixed in xauth? The work arounds do work, but are kludgy and would have to be implemented by a large number of users.
For the record the XServe is running Leopard, and the desktop is running Snow Leopard, with the latest 2.6.2 XQuartz installed.
Cheers,
