Yeah, there are some issues with NFS directories that I've found as well, but the main reason to use NFS over AFP is that you can have multiple users access the same mount. You can't do that with AFP.

This was first brought to my attention in June 2008 (http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/ticket/115) and was addressed in February of 2009 (http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libXau/commit/?id=fc54a4f03b926dfdb590b112c7128516ffc25539). That change was included in XQuartz 2.4.0 beta1 and Snow Leopard.

My guess is that you're seeing this when sshing into your XServe. Install XQuartz-2.6.1 on your Leopard XServe, and it should go away.
