I see the same thing at times as well. Usually when I have a lot of X11 windows open (usually Nedit windows).
Sometimes I see the following in my Terminal window when it starts occurring:
NEdit warning:
XmClipboardInquireLength() failed: clipboard locked.
However, I've never been able to figure out how to determine who has the clipboard locked to see if just shutting down that window/application solves the problem.
I tend to see it when I have X11 windows open for several days and a lot of windows.
