You forgot the "b"
/opt/X11/bin/xpbproxy
There is no man page for it.

You can read the bug report ... essentially, some people have reported that copying from X11 doesn't work if it is the first copy made after logging in. After a copy is made in a native application, it starts working.

I haven't looked at the code in a long time, and I wasn't the original author, so I can't really go into detail. Apparently xpbproxy gets hung up if there is invalid (or no) data available in the pasteboard. The workaround is simple for this bug, and it's not the one you are facing.
