If you're serious about remote installation, you are (a) using the command line as Jeremy suggested (b) under control of a proper configuration management system. Even f it takes 3 minutes, they're 3 minutes that can happen at a convenient time, like when you're initially provisioning the machine instead of when someone's sitting in front of it.
That said, probably nothing can speed up the parts of the install involving the prelink mechanism and shared object cache, for example, except rewiring the whole OS from the ground up for ELF instead of Mach-O. If you think you're up to that, the Darwin source is open.
