Your number seems a bit low. I'd say 98% of Apple users don't care about X11. But those 2% are extremely influential. Did you see any pictures of the NASA control room for the Mars Curiosity landing? All Macs except for one. Have you ever been a free weekly Colloquium at the SETI Institute? It is almost always a guest speaker's MacBook sitting on the podium. Why are Macs so popular in the scientific community? I don't know why but my guess is good X11 support and the Unix heritage play a big part. IMO Apple should be expending more energy (money) catering to this influential group.

90% of Apple users don't care about X11. The ones who do, well, 16 clicks is nothing compared to having to put up with X11 (*any* X11) afterward.
