Except, as I noted, the settings that were working aren't working now.
Copy/paste from X11 (xterm or other programs) quit working, and the
error I posted was the error I kept seeing (and still see when trying
to use the automatic version of my Tcl/Tk hack).

Once copy/paste stopped working from X11 to OS X, none of the above
worked anymore, except for X11 to X11.

Right. I just read about that. One is the old cut/paste buffer (or
a name similar to that), and the other is the set of primary and
secondary selection buffers.
I'm guessing that the older method is what continued to work, and the
primary/secondary selection is what quit working (whether it was actually
there and just not responding, or completely missing, I can only go by
what I read in the errors).

...which is exactly what I did. I, personally, don't like Firefox. It
looks like someone wanted to make it look like windoze internet explorer,
which I consider one of the worst web browsers in the world. Again, just
my opinion. So I was using Seamonkey (also from Mozilla) with the now
dead Multizilla add-on. I finally had to upgrade, and then Adobe Flash
failed to work, despite having been installed on my Mac, so I started
using Opera 99% of the time instead (there's basically just one reason
why I still keep and use Seamonkey every now and then). And I've
never used the X11 version of any of those.

I'm not familiar with all of the options, so for me, it syncs these:
1) From X: highlight text, it's synced on both;
2) From OS X: highlight text, and then use either Edit-->Paste, CMD-C
(or CMD-X), or right-click and select Copy. But then, that may be
exactly what you're referring to. :-)

I've never gotten past a few seconds with either before I uninstalled
the port (this was all on FreeBSD).

I started (way back when we got X11R4 tapes from MIT at work, ca. 1989)
with twm, and when I discovered ctwm, I upgraded to it. When I got my
Mac, I never got ctwm working, and eventyally got used to the xQuartz wm.

I'm using the stock X11 that comes with the OS (Lion). That's the one
that I read about having a known bug with copy/paste between X and OS X
just like what I've seen. And since I only got a partial xcutsel (if
it's in the ports, I didn't see it), so I downloaded autocutsel as a
.tar.gz and compiled it myself. It works great for me. :-)
Btw, thanks for the details about the buffers---I didn't know half of
that, and I'll have to re-read it several times before it gets through
the chemobrain and into my memory. As I've said in other lists a few
times, my chemobrain-impacted[1] memory holds memory about as well as
my cast net holds water.... But, as usual, we all learn to adapt
to such things and go on with our lives despite such issues.
