Followed your advice and all is working correctly. Afraid all my code writing is command-line only, no X windows programming, so my experience with that is pretty limited. Pop up a remote xterm and emacs window is about all I ever do. And it's probably been over 10 years since I last messed with these settings. Anyway, thanks very much for your help, I'm all set up and back in business.
