Thank you for taking the time to think about what may have happened.
Regrettably, I have .xinitrc with the following contents (using a python triple quote to emphasize the lack of newline at the end of the file):
'''xset -b
xset fp+ ~/BDF/
exec quartz-wm'''
Having read the list's previous messages, I recalled a discussion about xinitrc vs xinitrc.d, which I have now found at [1]. I have successfully made the changes proposed there.
