Hi Folks,
So I was happily working away with the version of X11.app that came with OS X 10.6, with any updates applied by software update. Then at a colleague's suggestion, I tried installing Xquartz (XQuartz-2.7.4.dmg<http://xquartz.macosforge.org/downloads/SL/XQuartz-2.7.4.dmg>). Didn't work, completely hosed my X environment (xterm would hang, ssh -X sessions would hang). So…
Can you provide specific information (logs, etc)?
Followed the instructions for uninstalling,
What instructions?http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X11-UsersFAQ#UninstallSnowLeopardorLater ?
I made the mistake of following the Leopard instructions - which remove
the base X11 install as well as quartz. Big oops on my part.
All works fine, but I expect there have been updates since the DVD version, but software update tells me my system is up to date.
Yeah, you need to re-install the 10.6.8 Combo Update and subsequent security updates.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Thanks for the pointer. I'm actually surprised it worked, though -
rather than telling me that my system was more up-to-date than the combo
updater.
In any case, things are now interesting - xterm -version reports v. 251
(vs. 244) and the system profiler reports x11 v. 2.3.6 (vs. 2.3.4) -
both of which are newer than what's on the 10.6 install DVD.
And everything seems to work.
Thanks!
Miles
